2 /5 Miki J: Parking was easy to find and it wasn’t too busy for a Monday afternoon, which made for a relaxed visit.
This was my second time at Chubby’s Fish and Chips, and this time I decided to try the “Sydney’s Best Beer Battered Fish and Chips.” Unfortunately, the fish itself was quite dry and had a strong, aged fish smell, which gave the impression it may have been frozen and stored for some time rather than being fresh. Because of that, it didn’t live up to the “Sydney’s Best” name. I think removing “Best” from the title would better reflect the product in its current form.
The calamari was good, though slightly bland in seasoning. The chips and potato scallops were both solid and enjoyable.
On a positive note, I had the fish cocktails on my previous visit and tried them again today — they were 10/10 and easily the highlight. They’re honestly some of the best I’ve had.
Overall, while the beer-battered fish wasn’t the best (nor the worst), promoting it as “Sydney’s Best” sets a high expectation that wasn’t met on this occasion. I’ve noticed similar feedback in other reviews as well. With some improvements in freshness and consistency, this place has real potential — especially given how good the fish cocktails are. Would love to see it become the best on the Northern Beaches.
