The statue was was commissioned by one of the fathers of Manly , Henry Gilbert Smith, and was sculpted by Peter Pickering in 1856 There are some who say this statue was the inspiration for the book Kangaroo, which was written by D H Lawrence in the early 1920’s after a trip by tram from Manly to Collaroy along Pittwater Road.

Henry Gilbert Smith is a businessman who came up with the idea of creating a resort in the village of Manly. According to his idea, a kangaroo perched on a cliff welcomes guests to the Manly resort. This is one of the oldest monuments remaining from the founding of Manly. The monument is carved from sandstone and overlooks the beaches of Manly from the cliff. A beautiful, secluded place. Be careful, there are no fences on the rock!
